Upcoming Workshops
30.01.2026 - The Theory of Data Visualisation: Principles for Clear and Effective Communication
This workshop explores the theory of data visualisation, focusing on what makes statistical graphics effective, honest, and memorable. We will discuss the perceptual principles of data visualisation, the “grammar” of graphics, and common pitfalls such as chart-junk and misrepresentation. We will examine exemplary (and infamous!) historical charts, and reflect on different approaches to visualisation in papers, talks, and other scientific contexts. A hands-on session will allow everyone to apply these ideas in practice, building a foundation for making clear, compelling figures in their own research. The workshop will not involve coding and is addressed to students in any stage of their PhD.
Instructor: Dr. Francesco Grassi (Affiliation: Cognition, Emotion and Behavior Department)
Duration: 9:00 - 17:30 (incl. 1 hr. lunchbreak)
Credits: 0.5
Registration is open to BeCog students until 14.11.2025. Please register by sending a brief email to becog(at)uni-goettingen.de. After 14.11.2025, registration will open to students outside of BeCog.
