Building climate resilient cocoa farming in West Africa
Agroforestry systems, which integrate trees and shrubs into farming, are vital to achieving sustainable cocoa production in West Africa where 70 percent of the world cocoa is produced. Climate change induced drought means that it is ever more critical to adapt farming practices and find new approaches. Research led by scientists from the University of Göttingen sheds light on a promising new approach to improve climate resilience in cocoa agroforestry across West Africa.

The Senate's proposal to vote out the President of the University of Göttingen on 21 October 2024 had been very clearly rejected by the University’s highest supervisory body, the University Foundation Committee, due to incomprehensible reasoning. The ensuing joint meeting of the two bodies took place on 20 November 2024, as it is anchored in the University's constitution. At the end of the joint meeting, no agreement could be reached between the committees. As a result, the Senate confirmed its decision to vote Professor Metin Tolan out of office in a session held immediately afterwards.

A document held in Göttingen University’s Faculty of Humanities has been revealed as an 18th century forgery. The document purports to be from 1266, but mentions a church in Pisa that was not built until later. This discovery is the result of a team of researchers consisting of a historian from the University of Göttingen working with Italian researchers. They were actually looking for exhibits for the Forum Wissen, the knowledge museum of the University, when they stumbled across this fascinating forgery.

Southeast Asia’s tropical forests are renowned for their biodiversity, but at the same time face significant threats from the expansion of oil palm plantations. With global demand for palm oil rising, the urgency for effective restoration strategies in these landscapes has become critical. A long-running experiment led by Göttingen University with the IPB University, Bogor and Jambi University in Indonesia, investigated how ecological restoration promotes biodiversity recovery in oil palm plantations.

The University of Göttingen has joined the ‘Niedersachsen gegen Antisemitismus’ (Lower Saxony against antisemitism) campaign. The aim of the campaign is to recognise antisemitism in everyday life, to confront it and to robustly argue against it. more…Diverse and diverging demands on forests in Germany
Forests provide biodiversity, ecosystem functions, income and much more. How can these diverse and seemingly diverging demands be met? An international research team led by Göttingen University addressed this question by analysing the effects of enriching beech forests in Germany with commercially valuable native (to mountainous regions of Europe) and non-native conifer species, in this case, the Norway spruce and Douglas fir, respectively.
