Current exhibition: In SILENT grief?

This exhibition explores how we can think about burial and mourning in Germany intersectionally.

In Germany, the term "piety" is often used in the context of mourning and sepulchral culture. The term piety (Latin "pietas", from pius = dutiful; devout) can be defined as tactful consideration, especially with regard to the feelings and religious values of others. In the funeral industry, piety refers to a respectful treatment of the deceased and the mourners.

Ideas of reverent behavior are always culturally influenced. According to the German Federation of Funeral Directors, showing piety is done by wearing appropriate mourning clothing and speaking suitable, comforting words. In contrast, practices and aesthetics that deviate from this norm are considered impious. Funerals are always an expression of identity and social power dynamics. Grief and sepulchral culture are experienced very differently globally and even within Germany. It is therefore impossible to create a uniform definition of reverent behavior. A tension arises in which self-determined dying and burying in Germany is not always possible or socially desirable. Thus, the conscientious break with "classic" funeral and mourning customs has established itself as a form of protest, among others, in the LGBTQAI+ community.

Past exhibition: COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many people differently, depending on gender, class and race, living conditions, care responsibilities, whether single parent, in short-time work or even unemployed, underpaid, without childcare, isolated and alone at home – the effects were more than challenging for many people. The books in the feminist display case address some of the structural and societal causes of these conditions.
