International Workshop on Designing Behavioural Interventions 1-3 September 2026 Crop residue burning remains one of the major environmental challenges in northern India. While considerable progress has been made in developing technological alternatives and policy measures, their successful adoption ultimately depends on people: on how farmers perceive these alternatives, exchange experiences, coordinate with others, and adapt new practices to their local realities. This international workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from India, Germany, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and other partner countries to explore these behavioural and institutional dimensions. Rather than focusing on a single solution, the workshop aims to create a space for dialogue, shared learning, and collaborative problem-solving across disciplines and sectors. A particular focus will be the use of experiential methods, including economic games, as tools for learning, reflection, and the collaborative design of behaviourally informed interventions. We are interested not only in understanding behaviour but also in developing practical approaches that can later be explored together with farming communities. The workshop marks the first step of a planned international research initiative. During these three days, participants will jointly develop ideas, identify promising methodological approaches, and lay the conceptual foundation for a future collaborative field project on sustainable crop residue management. The workshop is organised by Prof. Dr. Claudia Keser (University of Göttingen) in collaboration with Prof. Sujoy Chakravarty (Jawaharlal Nehru University), who serves as the local host. The workshop is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) - Initiation of International Collaboration Programme.
