Micro-Credentials at the University of Göttingen
Definition and purpose:
Micro-Credentials are standardised, certified learning opportunities, including digital formats where appropriate, worth 1 to 17 ECTS credits and based on clearly defined competences. They provide evidence of flexible competence development, support individual professional and personal development, and promote lifelong learning through upskilling and reskilling.
Target groups:
Members of the University of Göttingen and partner universities, as well as external participants, in particular working professionals and lifelong learners.
Content and formal framework:
- The scope of a Micro-Credential is expressed in credits according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Micro-Credentials comprise 1 to 17 ECTS credits.
- Micro-Credentials can be offered as part of existing degree programmes or as stand-alone professional development or continuing education formats. They can be integrated into curricula from 3 ECTS credits onwards.
- Micro-Credentials are classified as “other study opportunities” and are subject to the University’s General Examination Regulations (APO) and assigned to a degree-specific study and examination regulation.
- Micro-Credentials are designed to provide specific, in-demand knowledge, skills and abilities that are relevant to the labour market, society or personal development.
- Within undergraduate study, Micro-Credentials provide opportunities for flexible learning pathways, specialisation and competence-oriented learning opportunities. They can be particularly suitable for the transition into higher education, the transition from bachelor’s to master’s study, the acquisition of transferable skills and additional qualifications, and for students who discontinue their degree programme..
- Micro-Credentials are modular and can therefore be taken independently or combined to build towards larger qualifications (“stacking”).
- Teaching and learning can take place online, on campus or in hybrid formats.
- Micro-Credentials belong to the learner and can be easily shared and stored in digital portfolios or wallets.
