Professor Dennis Baldocchi: research collaboration at Göttingen University’s Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology
Professor Dennis Baldocchi from the University of California in Berkeley has been awarded a Gauss Professorship by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Over the next two months, he will be conducting research at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology at the University of Göttingen, where he will be working with Professor Alexander Knohl and his team in the Bioclimatology Group.
Baldocchi is an expert in land-atmosphere interactions and his work has made a significant contribution to our understanding of carbon and water flows between vegetation and the atmosphere. He is one of the co-founders and scientific leaders of FLUXNET, a global network that has been continuously measuring and recording the exchange of greenhouse gases and energy in a wide variety of landscapes for over three decades. His research provides fundamental insights for climate science and helps to better assess the consequences of climate change and land use.
“We are really delighted to welcome Dennis Baldocchi here – thanks to this Göttingen Gauss Professorship,” says Knohl. “His expertise complements our research perfectly and opens up new perspectives for investigating land-atmosphere processes.” Baldocchi also emphasises the importance of the collaboration: “The University of Göttingen has outstanding data, infrastructure and scientific expertise. I look forward to developing new research questions here and deepening international exchange.” The visit will include an international symposium on land-atmosphere exchange processes in Göttingen in early October 2025, where researchers from numerous institutions will discuss current findings and perspectives.
The Gauss Professorship was established by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities Lower Saxony Academy of Sciences in Göttingen to attract internationally renowned scientists to visit Lower Saxony to carry out research. The aim of the professorship is to strengthen international networking and promote scientific exchange in Lower Saxony in the long term.
